KIND Schools Challenge

Kindness has the power to unite school communities and undermine common issues such as bullying and harassment. That’s why Making Caring Common, a project of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and The KIND Foundation partnered to host the KIND Schools Challenge. Middle- and high-school students nationwide were invited to submit a project to make their school communities kinder and more inclusive.

With funding and support, we helped ten incredible finalists implement their projects. Now, we are thrilled to announce our winning project, ELL Give Back Program, from Medford High School in Medford, Massachusetts. Learn more about the winner below then check out this toolkit for ideas on how to bring kindness into the classroom.

Students – Jenna, Rubia, and Luiza – created a series of videos in seven different languages to help new English Language Learners (ELL) navigate their school community. From opening a locker to obtaining a bus pass, these videos help these students feel more welcomed and comfortable at their new school.
“The advice I would give to people who want to do something like this is don’t give up. You make so many people happy. You help people. It’s the best feeling!”

— Luiza, KIND Schools Challenge Winner
